algardi s first major commission came in 1634, when cardinal ubaldini (medici) contracted funeral monument great-uncle, pope leo xi, third of medici popes, had reigned less month in 1605. monument started in 1640, , completed 1644. arrangement mirrors 1 designed bernini tomb of urban viii (1628–47), central hieratic sculpture of pope seated in full regalia , offering hand of blessing, while @ feet, 2 allegorical female figures flank sarcophagus. however, in bernini s tomb, vigorous upraised arm , posture of pope counterbalanced active drama below, wherein figures of charity , justice either distracted putti or lost in contemplation, while skeletal death actively writes epitaph. algardi s tomb less dynamic. allegorical figures of magnanimity , liberality have impassive, ethereal dignity. have identified helmeted figure of magnanimity of athena , iconic images of wisdom. liberality resembles duquesnoy s famous santa susanna, rendered more elegant. tomb somberly monotone , lacks polychromatic excitement detracts elegiac mood of urban viii s tomb.


in 1635–38, pietro boncompagni commissioned algardi colossal statue of philip neri kneeling angels santa maria in vallicella, completed in 1640. after this, algardi produced interactive sculptural group representing beheading of saint paul 2 figures: kneeling, resigned saint , executioner poised strike sword-blow, church of san paolo, bologna. these works established reputation. bernini s characteristic works, express baroque aesthetic of depicting dramatic attitudes , emotional expressions, yet algardi s sculpture has restraining sobriety in contrast of rival.
