The electrostatic field inside a conductive object is zero Electrostatic induction
surface charges induced in metal objects nearby charge. electrostatic field (lines arrows) of nearby positive charge (+) causes mobile charges in metal objects separate. negative charges (blue) attracted , move surface of object facing external charge. positive charges (red) repelled , move surface facing away. these induced surface charges create opposing electric field cancels field of external charge throughout interior of metal. therefore electrostatic induction ensures electric field everywhere inside conductive object zero.
a remaining question how large induced charges are. movement of charges caused force exerted on them electric field of external charged object, coulomb s law. charges in metal object continue separate, resulting positive , negative regions create own electric field, opposes field of external charge. process continues until (within fraction of second) equilibrium reached in induced charges right size cancel external electric field throughout interior of metal object. remaining mobile charges (electrons) in interior of metal no longer feel force , net motion of charges stops.
