Structure Sinnott Memorial Observation Station
the sinnott memorial observation station built on victor rock, outcropping on cliff face of crater lake’s caldera wall, approximately 50 feet below crest. structure first in park use log , stone masonry construction. structure’s rustic style set architectural standard future buildings constructed @ crater lake national park.
to sinnott building, visitors follow short, stairstep trail rim village entrance. entrance door opens 40 foot 40 foot observation room. on north side of room, open-air balcony offers visitors spectacular view lake. balcony covered cantilever log roof. museum exhibits located in center of observation room , around walls. exhibits highlight geologic history of mount mazama , formation of crater lake. there hidden 12 14 foot workroom adjacent museum space. door on east side of room leads exit stairs hidden view stone wall.
the building constructed of heavy, native stone , concrete log beams supporting roof. structure’s footprint irregular because building designed merge cliff. stone walls load-bearing rough rock exposed on outer walls blend surrounding landscape.
in 1930s, building’s roof re-built asphalt , lead flashing stop leaking. in 1961, flagstone paving added interior floor , exterior entry patio area. entire structure renovated in 2003. despite changes required on years, national park service has been careful maintain rustic of building. because of architectural , historic significance, sinnott memorial building listed on national register of historic places in 1988.
