history

established in 1938 third , current nc 28, traversed georgia highlands, duplexed us 64 franklin. continuing northeast franklin, replaced nc 286 end @ us 19, in lauada. in 1940, nc 28 extended northeast along us 19 through bryson city , ela, replaced part of nc 107, ending in cherokee. in 1947, nc 28 truncated former northern terminus; former routing cherokee becoming us 19a. in 1954, nc 28 extended southwest along us 19 almond , northwest along new primary routing fontana, replaced nc 288 current northern terminus @ deals gap. in 1974, nc 28 adjusted one-way streets in downtown franklin, in concurrency us 441 bus, via main street , palmer street.


the first nc 28 original state highway traversed nc 10, in andrews, through franklin, highlands, rosman, brevard , hendersonville, nc 20, in bat cave. in 1923, nc 28 rerouted west of franklin on new primary routing elf , hayesville, replacing nc 109 hayesville nc 10, in murphy. in 1929, nc 28 extended west murphy along new primary routing tennessee state line. in 1932, nc 28 extended northeast along new primary routing bat cave old fort, overlapped us 70 marion; going north marion, in concurrency us 221, traversed through linville, boone , jefferson (replacing nc 691 in process) us 21/nc 26, in twin oaks, reaching high point @ 335 miles (539 km) long. in 1932, us 64 assigned along nc 28 tennessee state line old fort. in 1934, of nc 28 decommissioned in favor of us 64 , us 221.


the second nc 28 existed 1935-1938, had replaced nc 21 between fayetteville , delco, through elizabethtown. renumbered nc 87.

north carolina highway 282 (nc 282) established new primary routing georgia state line highlands. in 1938, nc 282 renumbered part of nc 28.



north carolina highway 286

north carolina highway 286 (nc 286) original state highway began georgia state line, near otto, nc 10, along old alarka road. in 1927, nc 286 renumbered extension of nc 285, georgia state line franklin. around 1938, nc 286 replaced nc 28 , moved north terminus community of swain (today known lauada).



north carolina highway 288


north carolina highway 288 (nc 288) primary route served fontana area 1929-1944 , revived again 1951-1954. first nc 288 traversed nc 108, in deals gap, nc 10, in bryson city. in 1942, construction began on fontana dam; 1944, nc 288 decommissioned when majority of route submerged. various sections of old highway still exist on higher ground , incorporated in hiking trails reachable fontana dam parking area. second nc 288 return along western part of highway wasn t submerged, linking relocated fontana community. in 1954, new construction completed between fontana , almond, , of nc 288 renumbered nc 28.


nc 288 rebuilt along north shore of fontana lake national park service, agreement made between county, state, , federal government. construction of new fontana road (sr 1364) completed in 1958, connecting bryson city border of great smoky mountains national park. 1960-1970, 6.3 miles (10.1 km) built within park, called lakeview drive; ending west of tunnel, went through aptly named tunnel ridge. since then, questions cost of building highway , environmental impact of road had stopped further construction. known unofficially road nowhere, provides access various hiking trails within national park. after being in limbo forty years, resolved in february, 2010 when u.s. department of interior signed settlement agreement paying swain county $52 million in lieu of building highway. of june 2017, $12.8 million of has been paid.
