1934
the airline established aeronaves de méxico on 15 september 1934, antonio díaz lombardo. first aircraft stinson sr. julio zinser piloted maiden flight on mexico city – acapulco route on 14 september 1934.

1940s
when world war ii began, airline continued grow of pan am, owned 25% of new mexican airline. aeroméxico saw few changes next 2 decades. however, during 1950s, renovation began, , airline took on various small competitor companies across country, including aerovías guest (the second airline of country @ time) held routes madrid , paris. aeroméxico added aircraft including douglas dc-3 , successor, douglas dc-4.

during late 1950s, douglas dc-4s replaced pressurised douglas dc-6s , 2 bristol britannias (the first turboprop passenger aircraft in fleet) , in 1958, services inaugurated idlewild airport (now jfk) using britannias. mexico city-new york route prove profitable aeronaves , north american competitors. airline nationalised in 1959.
1960s
in 1960s, fleet of aeronaves de méxico (aeroméxico) included douglas dc-3, douglas dc-6, , bristol britannia aircraft. starting in 1961, aeronaves began replacing piston-engined aircraft new jets. first jet-engined aircraft pair of douglas dc-8s. dc-8s used on routes within mexico , new york city. between 1962 , 1963, aeronaves de méxico (aeroméxico) took on aerovías guest mexico second airline, , merged under name aeronaves de méxico. later in 1960s, more dc-8s added , service europe resumed, operated 2 comet-4c aircraft dry-leased aerovías guest prior merger.

the 1970s brought dramatic changes aeroméxico. in 1970, under government plan, mexican domestic airlines nationalized integrated air transport system under control of aeronaves de méxico. system included 8 smaller carriers, although these later disbanded. during 1970s, remaining douglas dc-6 , bristol britannia aircraft retired. new color scheme (orange , black) introduced , airline changed name aeronaves de méxico current, shortened version of aeroméxico in february 1972.
aeroméxico, 1 of launch customers of mcdonnell douglas dc-10-30 program, received first of aircraft in 1974. same year airline took delivery of first 7 mcdonnell douglas dc-9-32s. during period airline s popularity , visibility grew dramatically. due in part aeroméxico s involvement in mexican movies. basically, every time characters in movie produced in mexico had fly somewhere, depicted flying on aeroméxico aircraft. service canada initiated , in 1970s, 2 more dc-9-15s added fleet.
1980s
the 1980s marked expansion. new color scheme introduced (orange paint , silver), 2 dc-10-15s , dc-10-30 added in 1981 , in 1984. aeroméxico, 1 of launch customers of mcdonnell douglas md-82 (an elongated version of dc-9), received first 2 in late 1981. between 1980 , 1981, 8 more dc-9-32 aircraft added. on 31 august 1986, company suffered fatal accident outside mexico when aeroméxico flight 498, douglas dc-9, approaching los angeles international airport struck light aircraft. both aircraft fell earth in los angeles suburb of cerritos, california. 64 passengers , crew on board dc-9-32 killed, 3 people in light aircraft , 15 people on ground. after 3 years , long trial, aircraft s crew , airline found not blame. because pilot of piper had strayed air traffic control zone reserved commercial flights. same year, airline acquired charter carrier gatsa , used charter operations until december. in april 1988, state-owned company declared bankrupt , grounded 3 months because of lack of organization, fleet average of 20 years without renovation plan , depredating administration mexican government. in august, privatization program underway. involved retiring 8 douglas dc-8s along remaining ten dc-9-15 aircraft. starting privatization process included new corporate name (aerovias de mexico sa de cv). airline restarted operations predecessor s assets, including headquarters building, maintenance hangar, aircraft , former aeronaves de mexico employees.

1990s
the 1990s turbulent times, rise in fuel costs due gulf war, , domestic fare war caused start airlines taesa, servicios aéreos rutas oriente, aviacsa, among others, constant labor problems. in april 1991 first 2 767-200ers introduced fleet starting replace dc-10s in services europe, new york , tijuana, 2 767-300ers joined fleet later year. part of renovation , expansion program introduce 24 direct flights madrid , paris mexico city boeing 767s services frankfurt via paris , rome via madrid.
in 1992 grupo aeroméxico among other investors failed consummate acquisition of continental airlines. after failing invest in continental, aeroméxico acquired bankrupt aeroperú peruvian government.
in 1993 aeroméxico group took on mexicana, second largest airline in mexican market under same management. there great dispute in june 1993 pilot union regarding transfer of flights regional subsidiary aeromonterrey, had non-union pilots. between 1994 , 1995, 6 dc-10 aircraft in fleet retired. last revenue flight in 1995.
in december 1994 (three weeks after carlos salinas de gortari left office), first of several devaluations in next 18 months started, giving way economic crisis in mexico. consequence, aeroméxico had cut capacity , flights frankfurt , rome canceled, 4 mcdonnell douglas md-80s , 4 boeing 767s returned lessors, retirement pilots , other staff underway, , new boeing 767 due delivery in april 1995 instead transferred airline. flights madrid , paris operated 2 boeing 767-300er jets.
in 1996 cintra created prevent 2 main carriers going bankrupt. boeing 757s of aeroméxico s original renovation program transferred mexicana , aeroperú. market , airline recovered between 1996 , 1998; 8 mcdonnell douglas md80s leased along 2 boeing 767-200ers.
the sale of grupo cintra scheduled after several delays in september 1999, , looming presidential elections in 2000, delayed once again. ruling party lost election after 70 years in office , policies changed. due recession in 2000, new government put on hold, waiting better economic conditions start stock sell-off, , when start, 11 september 2001 attacks occurred , nothing materialized since 2 main carriers, mexicana , aeroméxico, losing large amounts of money.

between 2000 , 2005, aeroméxico had average fleet of 60 aircraft in mainline operation, plus 20 in aerolitoral, 5 ceos during time. after 9/11 , iraq war, pursued fleet renovation program. in 2003, airline acquired first boeing 737-700 instead of boeing 717 replacement aging dc-9 aircraft. on 29 march 2006 aeroméxico ceo, andrés conesa announced inauguration of direct flights between japan , mexico city via tijuana. after purchase of 2 boeing 777-200ers, making aeroméxico third airline in latin america fly regularly asia, after varig , defunct vasp. since varig s demise, aeroméxico airline service. aeroméxico resumed mexico city-tijuana-shanghai route twice week of 30 march 2010. suspension of flight due 2009 flu pandemic.
on 29 june 2006, international lease finance corporation (ilfc) , aeroméxico announced airline operate 3 boeing 787 dreamliners. aeroméxico s deliveries scheduled begin in 2012. 2006, consorcio aeroméxico s.a. de c.v., parent company of aeroméxico @ time, faced large debts , had no profits pay them off, offered aeroméxico sale in 2007. in october, week-long auction held, grupo financiero banamex, unit of citigroup, competing against saba family. on 17 october 2007, banamex offered highest bid , purchased airline us$249.1 million. in october 2010, aeroméxico s largest competitor, mexicana de aviacion, filed bankruptcy , placed in administration.

dreamliners
on 25 july 2012, aeroméxico ceo andrés conesa announced purchase of 6 boeing 787-9 dreamliners. new order added package of 20 aircraft company had announced in 2011 , 9 more boeing 787-8 dreamliner provided. delivery of dreamliners began in summer of 2013. total investment us$11 billion , includes acquisition of 90 boeing 737-8 max delivered 2018. airline took delivery of first boeing 787-8 dreamliner (sourced ilfc order book) in august 2013 , officially launched commercial service on 1 october 2013. between 2013 , 2015, remaining 8 delivered (seven leased , 2 owned aeroméxico outright).
