Air strips Pembroke, Massachusetts
two privately owned grass runways located in pembroke, 1 of dubbed pheasant field, consisting of 1,800 foot grass strip located on secluded road north of town center , appears closed, property seemingly overgrown trees , vegetation; estimated no aircraft have operated out of location in around 10-15 years.
the other airport called sherman field , located on busier barker street, 1 mile pembroke center , across street historical herring run area. named after original owner al sherman, built airport in 1949. in 1963 officially listed on aviation maps of location pheasant field, remained unused 1990s until mid-2000s, when came under new ownership, faa identifier sherman pvt ma63. since 2005 there has been construction on property contains house , hangar, 2 multi-purpose sheds both built since new ownership. field area aircraft park extensively cleared between 2006-2009 , original 1,600 foot grass runway extended larger 2,100 feet both accommodate larger aircraft , make takeoffs , landings safer. aircraft usage seldom throughout these years owner briefly keeping piper supercub aircraft in hangar , few aircraft size of cessna 206 utilizing runway.
in august 2012, owners hosted antique air show, open public @ location part of pembroke tercentenary held year, although part privately established , funded. town offered constant shuttle bus service went center of town sherman field 11 a.m. 2 p.m. total attendance estimated @ on 2,000 14 airplanes, including restored boeing pt-17 stearman bi-plane arriving @ airport throughout day, other attractions included flight-simulator , rides on robinson r44 helicopter ryan rotors out of plymouth municipal airport.
another fly-in took place in 2013; however, lacked involvement town , not open public, total of 27 aircraft arrived better turnout previous event. planned private fly-in take place @ location annually, on third weekend in august.
it reported horse barn built on location, explains lack of aircraft traffic recently.
