when francesco died, younger brother cardinal ferdinando de medici inherited position of grand duke. ferdinando brought prized chinese , medici porcelains him florence villa medici in rome, along paintings , treasured roman antiquities. ubiquity of european soft-paste , hard-paste porcelains in eighteenth century, medici heirs in house of lorraine came value less , less imperfect medici porcelains, minute firing cracks , bubbled glazes. in 1772 auction in palazzo vecchio of objects storage dispersed medici porcelains conserved in tuscany. venture disappeared history until interest revived after mid-nineteenth century. 1588 inventory drawn after francesco s death listed 310 pieces. today sixty or seventy pieces known survive.
the next successful european attempt make soft-paste porcelain come rouen manufactory in france, in 1673.
