according united states census bureau, city has total area of 29.8 square miles (77 km), of 28.9 square miles (75 km) land , 0.9 square miles (2.3 km), or 2.96%, water.


leominster located on plateau above nashua river. river runs through eastern proportion of city , cuts through northern part of city meanders towards fitchburg. northern , western leominster have more rugged terrain defined scattered hills. prominent hills both north , south monoosnoc hills in western part of city. south monoosnoc hill highest point in town @ 1,020 feet. in 19th century, south hill quarried granite used in home foundations. west of 2 hills lies no town reservoir , leominster state forest. east, lies monoosnoc brook winds through center of town , important power source manufacturers.


villages

the city divided several small villages such french hill, large hill covered in planned blocks of triple decker apartment houses located 1st street 12th street. called french hill because large immigrant french population took root. in 20th century, on lincoln terrace, immigrating italian families began arrive in area , built semi-closed society existed many years. french population built new church , moved closer it. other areas include morse hollow, north leominster, rice hill, flats, bowery, west side, , car barn area, located along fitchburg border, so-called because fitchburg & leominster railway trolley cars stored , maintained in area. has buses. granite marker showing birthplace of johnny appleseed can found on johnny appleseed lane.
