from end of 1904, gapon started cooperate radicals championed abolition of tsar s autocracy.
on 22 january [o.s. 9 january] 1905, day after general strike burst out in st. petersburg, gapon organized workers procession present emotionally charged written petition tsar. demonstration ended tragically (bloody sunday 1905). gapon s life saved pinchas rutenberg, took him away gunfire , changed priestly garments common man s. became guest of maxim gorky.
following bloody sunday, gapon anathematized tsar , called upon workers take action against regime, after escaped abroad, had close ties socialist-revolutionary party. gapon , rutenberg welcomed in europe both prominent russian émigrées georgy plekhanov, vladimir lenin, peter kropotkin , french socialist leaders jean jaurès , georges clemenceau. found sanctuary in geneva , in london @ 33 dunstan house, stepney, anarchists peter kropotkin , rudolf rocker. after october manifesto, before end of 1905, gapon returned russia , resumed contact okhrana.
