the lh cars redesigned 1998 model year, 1998 intrepid being designed robert boniface , taking 31 months design freeze commencement. engines replaced 2 new all-aluminum units: dohc 2.7 l ( 2736 cc), 200 hp (150 kw) v6 base models, , sohc 3.2 l (3231 cc), 225 hp (168 kw) v6 es. new, top-of-the-line r/t model added in 1999, centerpiece of redesigned version of 3.5 l (3518 cc) v6, producing 242 hp (180 kw) , 234 hp (174 kw) es. @ same time 3.2 l reduced option in es. intrepid redesigned 1998 model year, arriving in showrooms during late 1997. body shells designed stronger , stiffer, incorporating double-shear suspension mounts , integrated side impact protection.



my1999: minor changes interior panels. chrysler sentry key theft-deterrent system disabled ignition unless proper key used start engine.
my2000: new variable-assist steering, , optional 4-disc in-dash cd changer.
my2002: 3.5l replaced 3.2l, , water pump issues on 2.7l resolved, new wheel covers available 2002. r/t received 2 hp (1.5 kw) pcm programming changes allowed have 244 hp (182 kw) on 89-octane fuel. year when daimlerchrysler began cost-cutting led deletion of various features intrepid. notable deletion of illuminated headlight switch, illuminated traction control switch, illuminated lock , window switches, door courtesy lights (replaced red reflectors), illuminated ashtray receptacle, trunk lid liner, armrest power outlet, door emblems, driver s seat map pocket, , blacked-out front fascia paint scheme. cost-cutting 1 of reasons why sales of intrepid started slump.
my2003: no major changes made except optional 4-disc in-dash cd changer replaced optional 6-disc in-dash cd changer. r/t discontinued in 2003, new sxt model kept 3.5 l high output engine increase 250 hp (186 kw) rating. sxt moniker used across dodge product line trim level. intrepid sxt base model intrepid se 3.5 h.o. engine taken r/t, sportier features such sunroof , spoiler. value trim model classified es (sxt), had less features es did more powerful engine.
my2004: daimlerchrysler discontinued intrepid after 2004 replaced new rear wheel drive lx vehicles; 2005 dodge magnum , 2006 dodge charger. last intrepid rolled off assembly line on august 30, 2004.

the second generation marketed commercial , government markets. vehicles used make police interceptors, fire chief cars, , taxis similar earlier chevrolet caprice or ford crown victoria. these packages had distinctive styling differences (such small hub caps) , additional wiring support strobes , flashers in trunk compartment , in front grill. these packages , non-police (non-commercial) packages featured plastic front-end intake vents routed air onto rotors additional cooling , stopping power.

in 2001, intrepid made debut on nascar circuit, signifying return of dodge nascar competition after 18-year hiatus. drivers in initial dodge campaign included bill elliott, jason leffler, ward burton, sterling marlin, john andretti, buckshot jones, kyle petty, stacy compton, dave blaney, , casey atwood. marlin first win in dodge, giving marque first victory since 1977, neil bonnett driving. intrepid continued in nascar until 2006 when dodge charger used.
