in 1958, foss unsuccessfully sought seat in u.s. house of representatives, having been defeated wartime pilot hero, democrat george mcgovern. foss tried re-enter politics in 1962 in campaign succeed sen. francis case, died in office. foss , several other contenders lost joseph h. bottum, filled out case s term.
