peter de halswell holder in 1285, , held feudal tenure of 1/4 of knight s fee. william de halswell held manor in 1303 1/8 of knight s fee. william halswell living in 1394 , appears have been holder in 1428. descent uncertain thereafter until nicholas halswell (c.1512-1564), mp bridgwater in 1553 , 1563, son of john halswell wife mary est. nicholas son wife margery tremayle (d.1573) robert halswell (d.1570), built halswell house, eldest son wife susan brouncker (daughter of henry brouncker of melksham, wiltshire, sheriff of wiltshire) sir nicholas halswell (1566-1633), mp bridgwater in 1604. eldest son robert halswell (d.1626), mp bridgwater in 1614, predeceased him, , sir nicholas s heir eldest surviving son henry halswell (d.1636). sir nicholas had settled of property, including halswell, onto henry in 1628 in order escape creditors. henry died unmarried , without progeny when heir became brother rev. hugh halswell (d. 1672), rector of cheriton, hampshire , proctor of oxford university, left sole daughter jane halswell (d.1650) sole heiress. jane married john tynte of chelvey court, brockley, somerset, , left son sir halswell tynte, 1st baronet (d.1702), inheritance became manor of halswell.

in 1667 manor put trust jane halswell s son sir halswell tynte, 1st baronet (1649–1702), mp bridgwater 1679–1689. rev. sir john tynte, 2nd baronet (1683–1710), rector of goathurst, married jane kemeys of kemeys family of cefn mably. succeeded successively 3 sons: sir halsewell tynte, 3rd baronet (1705–30), of halswell , cefnmabli, 2 daughters died young; rev. sir john tynte, 4th baronet (1707–1740), rector of goathurst, died unmarried , sir charles kemys tynte, 5th baronet (1710–1785), died without progeny leaving halswell niece adopted name kemys tynte. cefn mably remained in hands of kemeys tynte family until 1923. in 1916 kemeys-tynte s reclaimed dormant barony of wharton through petition house of lords. halswell estate sold lord wharton , broken through series of auctions between 1948 , 1950. estate buildings , of tudor manor subdivided flats, saving house destruction sweeping through other historic houses time until 1970s. baroque house, large , draughty such habitation left untouched , used warehouse. bulk of house bought succession of owners attempted reunite fragmented ownership of estate, last property developer , hotelier bought halswell in 2004 , went bankrupt in 2012.

british businessman , art collector edward strachan bought estate in 2013 , has begun comprehensive process of restoration of house, outbuildings, gardens , eighteenth-century landscape parkland intention of opening house public when restorations complete. end of 2013 derelict eighteenth-century lake system called mill wood, containing follies, bridges, dams , waterfalls purchased same owner , reunited house first time since estate broken in 1950. has been re-planted trees , follies being restored.
