prominent locals include ralph gardner, opposed newcastle when attempted prevent docking of coal ships in north shields. gardner imprisoned in 1653 refusing close brewery supplied provisions ships. in 1655, petitioned parliament against claimed unfair demands of newcastle. gardner, regarded local hero, had high school named in honour near former site of cottage. school, nicknamed ralphies /ˈræfiːz/ students closed in 1994 , redeveloped gardner park housing estate. monument gardner erected near school.
