these tumours of following types, characterized abnormal production of otherwise apparently normal cells or tissues.
although each of cell , tissue types occurs in 1 sex (male or female), within tumour can occur in opposite sex. consequently, depending on specific histology produced, these tumours can cause virilization in women , feminization in men.
tumour types in order of prevalence
granulosa cell tumour. tumour produces granulosa cells, found in ovary. malignant in 20% of women diagnosed it. tends present in women in 50-55yo age group post menopausal vaginal bleeding. uncommonly, similar possibly distinct tumour, juvenile granulosa cell tumour, presents in pre-pubertal girls precocious puberty. in both groups, vaginal bleeding due oestrogen secreted tumour. in older women, treatment total abdominal hysterectomy , removal of both ovaries. in young girls, fertility sparing treatment mainstay non-metastatic disease.
sertoli cell tumour. tumour produces sertoli cells, found in testicle. tumour occurs in both men , women.
thecoma. tumour produces theca of follicle, tissue found in ovarian follicle. tumour exclusively benign , unilateral. typically secretes estrogen, , result women tumour present postmenopausal bleeding.
leydig cell tumour. tumour produces leydig cells, found in testicle , tend secrete androgens.
sertoli-leydig cell tumour. tumour produces both sertoli , leydig cells. although both cell types occur in testicle, tumour can occur in ovary.
gynandroblastoma. rare tumour producing both ovarian (granulosa and/or theca) , testicular (sertoli and/or leydig) cells or tissues. typically consists of adult-type granulosa cells , sertoli cells, has been reported juvenile-type granulosa cells. has been reported occur in ovary usually, in testis. due rarity, malignant potential of tumour unclear; there 1 case report of late metastasis.
sex cord tumour annular tubules, abbreviated sctat. these rare tumours may sporadic or associated peutz-jeghers syndrome.
