history
lscg first political party advocate independent montenegro during turbulent 1990s, , remained strong supporter of independence idea throughout existence. 1 of 2 parties, alongside social democratic party, openly opposed montenegrin involvement in war in croatia , shelling of dubrovnik in 1991. despite advocating montenegrin nationalism , pursuing separatist policies, lscg strictly pacifist party, opting democratic means in political activity. openly supported restoration of montenegrin language , montenegrin orthodox church.
lscg founded on 26 january 1990 group of montenegrin pro-independence oriented intellectuals led slavko perović. lscg did not participate in 1990 election, perović 1 of candidates @ electoral list of union of reform forces. during 1990s, lscg party in montenegro openly advocated independence , opposed montenegrin shelling of dubrovnik , participation of montenegrin soldiers in yugoslav wars.
foundation , anti-war activism (1990-1995)
during independence referendum campaign in 1992 lscg main promoter of independence albanian democratic alliance, has decided boycott referendum, resulted in pro-independence option receiving 3.14% of votes, meant montenegro shall remain constituent republic (along serbia) of fr yugoslavia.
lscg participated @ parliamentary elections first time in 1992, , won 12,04% of votes , 13 seats, made third largest party in montenegro, behind dps s , ns. same year, lscg leader slavko perović party s presidential candidate, alsocoming in third place, winning 18,3% of votes, did not pass through second round of election, won momir bulatović (dps).
popular unity coalition (1996)
at 1996 parliamentary election lscg entered coalition agreement people s party (ns) called popular unity. idea such coalition open way reconciliation of montenegrins , serbs, , start think politics in different way. coalition of liberals , populists won 24.91% of votes , gained 19 mps, 9 of belonged lscg. however, lscg terminated coalition after decision of ns enter coalition ruling dps.
crisis , leadership change (1997-2000)
at 1997 presidential election, lscg did not table candidate. however, in second round party supported milo Đukanović on momir bulatović, in order send message not against west supported Đukanović s candidacy. @ next parliamentary election in 1998, lscg won 6,21%, or little more 20,000 votes, , 5 seats in montenegrin parliament. lscg lost significant number of voters due change of policy of dps, gradually started supporting independence of montenegro, attracting portion of voters. due poor electoral result, perović resigned post. @ party electoral convention, held on 23 , 24 january 1999, miodrag Živković officially became new political leader of lscg.
minority government support , decline (2001-2003)
at 2001 parliamentary election, lscg received larger number of votes: 7,85% (almost 28.000 votes), winning 6 seats in assembly. due political deadlock, in no party had won absolute power, lscg made agreement dps support minority government, following pledge dps within year referendum on independence have been held. however, lscg still retained resolute opposition attitude, , withdrew support minority government due fact referendum has not been announced in promised period. @ 2002 parliamentary election lscg campaign under slogan montenegro can - lscg, , won 5,77% of votes (just on 20.000 votes), receiving 4 seats.
together other opposition parties lscg boycotted presidential election held in february 2003, opted table candidate presidential election 3 months later. lscg candidate miodrag Živković won 31,44% of votes, defeated in first round ruling coalition candidate filip vujanović. these elections prove last election lscg participated in.
the rift , dissolution (2004-2005)
following outbreak of trsteno affair (sr), corruption scandal related selling of state-owned trsteno beach , cove in kotor municipality, involved party officials led incumbent party president miodrag Živković have been expelled party on 7 september 2004. expelled party faction led Živković went on form liberal party of montenegro (lpcg) in october 2004. following expulsion of Živković, vesna perović elected new leader of lscg on 23 october 2004.
however, following corruption scandal , general crisis in party, year before main programmatic goal of montenegrin independence carried out @ 21 may referendum, lscg passed decision infinitely freeze activity, move declared response constant repressive activity montenegrin agency of national security.
