lochner s major works include 3 large polyptychs: dombild altarpiece; last judgement, broken apart , in several collections; , nuremberg s crucifixion. 2 attributed paintings dated; 1445 nativity in alte pinakothek, munich, , presentation in temple 1447, in darmstadt. there smaller, earlier version of presentation scene @ calouste gulbenkian foundation, lisbon, dated 1445. secular works grew in demand , religious works became unfashionable in later centuries, 15th-century polyptychs broken , sold individual works, if panel or section contained image pass secular portrait.

the art historian ingo walther detects lochner s hand in pious intimacy , soulfulness of figures, expressed gently , elegantly, in extremely small format of pictures . chapuis agrees attribution, noting how many of miniatures share thematic similarities attributed panels. writes illustrations not peripheral phenomenon. on contrary, address several of concerns articulated in lochner s paintings , formulate them anew. there little doubt these exquisite images stem same mind. text of darmstadt book written in cologne vernacular, berlin book in latin.
