Protests and violence Bangladeshi general election, 2014



on night of 4 december 2013, jatiya party leader h. m. ershad threatened kill himself after security forces besieged home following decision boycott election. on 13 december, confined military hospital following arrest baridhara residence security forces. according rab commander, ershad had been taken there @ own request. zia put under house arrest since 29 december @ gulshan residence. bangladesh army deployed throughout country on 26 december on request of election commission maintain law , order. army stay on streets until 9 january 2014.


on 13 december, jamaat-e-islami s abdul quader mollah became first person executed war crimes relation bangladesh independence war resulting in violent protests islamist opposition. 2 ruling party activists hacked death in kalaroa, while jamaat-e-islami s activists firebombed train stations , blockaded roads. person died in clashes between police , jamaat-e-islami supporters in noakhali, while driver killed after party s activists chased him down. opposition alliance called general strike on sunday 15 december.


on 29 december 2013 bnp called march democracy towards dhaka, in defiance of police ban, protest against election. zia said: government autocratic , illegal. should step down . 1 person killed police in centre of dhaka, while guard killed in blast @ train station. supporters of ruling awami league clashed opposition activists outside bangladesh supreme court. bnp accused police of barring zia s car leaving in order lead march. thousands of security forces, police, present prevent opposition activists rallying. outside of supreme court, police threw hot , coloured water water cannons disperse protesters. sheikh hasina, while agreeing right of opposition protest, said: can wage anti-government agitation. make sure people not killed movement. train derailed opposition activists in gaibandha leading 3 deaths.


on 30 december, 18-party opposition alliance announced non-stop blockade of roads, railways , waterways across country 1 january 2014 in order resist scheduled election. decision came after barred holding national demonstrations previous day. protest termed march democracy. general strike called 4, 5 , 6 january opposition parties.


on 3 , 4 january, opposition activists attacked potential polling centres across bangladesh. set fire on 100 centres in lakshmipur, rajshahi, pirojpur, sylhet, jhenaidah, natore, sirajganj , brahmanbaria.

at least 18 people died in election day violence after security forces fired on protesters , opposition activists torched on 100 voting centres. in total 21 people died on day , 400 voting centers disrupted. bnp , jamaat-e-islami activists attacked awami league counterparts , hindus in 8 villages under thakurgaon sadar upazila leaving 15 people injured , houses , shops vandalised , looted. further, hindu temple along idols inside attacked. attacks spread through 8 villages including jhakua, jhardanga, baniyapara , mondoppara. hundreds of hindus these villages had fled fearing further attacks. on 7 january, 2 hindus temples, radha gobind mandir , kali mandir, burnt people suspected bnp party members. fearing rape threats, female members of hindu families sent away relatives homes families in abhaynagar of jessore, dinajpur, , thakurgaon. attacks occurred in dinajpur, rangpur, bogra, lalmonirhat, rajshahi, chittagong , jessore.
