Models IBM System/360 Model 30
closeup (profile) of 360/30 console
four models of 360/30 offered. vary amount of core memory system offered. c30, d30, e30 , f30 respectively configured 8k, 16k, 32k , 64k of core memory.
it little publicized there 2 versions of model 30, known (on rare occasions when distinguished @ all) 30-1 , 30-2. original 30-1 had 2.0 microsecond storage cycle. later, after first 1000 30-1 shipped, replaced 1.5-microsecond 30-2, although 30-1 silently retained in sales catalog. 2 cosmetically different; 30-1 looked other system/360 models, indicator lamps exposed on front panel , labeled, 30-2 took retrograde design step, putting lights behind stencil, had been on pre-360 machines ibm 1401.
the (faster) 30-2 had additional model, dc30, 24k of memory.
the 7th edition of ibm system/360 basic operating system programmer s guide, dated september 1967, lists first among major changes support intermediate storage size (24k) system/360 model 30.
96k upgrade
in response competitive pressures, ibm introduced memory upgrade option, allowing 96k on 360/30. seems, based on system s front panel, provision supporting more 64k had been pre-planned.
basic features
the cpu used 8-bit microarchitecture few hardware registers; programmer saw emulated microprogram. handling 4-byte word took (at least) 6 microseconds, based on 1.5 microsecond storage access cycle time.
