the torana gtr-x designed during era of lc series, , considered production in 1970s. gtr-x had wedge-shaped fibreglass body featuring hatchback rear access, , prototype cars had lc torana gtr xu-1 mechanical components.


the gtr-x looks similar iconic sports cars of 1970s, such maserati khamsin, ferrari 308 gt4, lotus esprit, , mazda rx-7. weighed 1,043 kg (2,299 lb) , has top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph). torana gtr-x in production have been first holden car factory fitted four-wheel disc brakes.


when holden released promotional brochure gtr-x, said, long, sleek hood accentuated low, wedge-shaped grille. body line sweeps @ rear elevated tail light assembly. simplicity keynote. achieved concealed headlights, sharp windshield rake, recessed parking , turning lights, , flush petrol filler access , door handles. front , rear bumpers assume contour of body. identify car, gtr-x identification contained within crisp black , orange stripe running parallel rocker panel .


the torana gtr-x highly developed holden concept, , though brochures, photography , promotional films produced show how serious in putting car production, company unable justify high cost of committing production given size of australian population then.


the existing complete prototype gtr-x car has been restored original white paint finish , remains on public display @ salmon street offices of holden in melbourne, victoria. car, white pictured, painted silver in mid 70s. had uc torana sl/e wheels fitted , few other cosmetic changes (bonnet badge, etc.) in attempt holden move car times , restore . during period, toured motor museums around country, including national motor museum @ birdwood in south australia. in 2003, car returned original build condition (white) car shine in melbourne, prior being shipped general motors technical center @ michigan celebration of automotive design spanning past 75 years.

in 1977, recaro built concept car 1977 sydney motor show; vehicle based on holden torana lx ss hatchback. appearing on front cover of october 1977 modern motor magazine, concept put recaro australia managing director david bones , marketing director robin luck (a former editor of modern motor).


the vehicle designed , built arcadipane automotive (peter arcadipane), featuring monza style front end coupled rear end had been shortened 355 mm , powered 308-cu in v8 backed m21 four-speed manual transmission. plan release vehicle once 2 key issues ironed out, being; confirmation of gmh s backing mechanical warranty , getting cost of vehicle below $15,000. in addition body modifications, key unique feature of vehicle interior. recaro commissioned special tanner in west germany produce sufficient hides upholster seats in unique green colour feature of car s paintwork (however, cost of full leather interior formed significant challenge in meeting $15,000 target).

in 2004, holden released luminous, hot pink or mangenta medium-sized, rear-drive concept car called torana tt36 (twin turbo; 3.6-litre v6). project named xp54, reflecting acronym experimental project , coded 54 in recognition of holden s so-called studio 54 design workshop in outer suburbs of melbourne. model said debut new platform general motors , previewed of 2006 ve commodore.


by applying twin ko4 warner turbochargers, air-to-air intercooler, , variable valve actuation alloytec 190, dropping compression 9.0:1, holden engineers able deliver power peak of 280 kw , no less 480nm of torque, 90% available 1600 rpm.


the prototype visited national motor museum @ birdwood in adelaide hills in 2008.
