the southern coast of faial seen foothills of feteira, summit of pico in east


it located 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) west of center of city of horta, connected southern extension of regional e.r.1-1ª roadway , northern municipal road in interior. farmlands dominate coastal plain between neighbouring parishes of angústias , castelo branco, while coast rocky area formed rugged lava stones , cliffs undercut atlantic ocean. highest point in parish peak of cangueiro, approximately 706 metres (2,316 ft) above sea level, below crater rim of cabeço gordo. coastal cliffs, mark southern border of town, @ 61 metres (200 ft) above sea level. lava flows formed intricate geomorphological structures, highlighted area of lajinha (on eastern border). wave motion , currents have carved region forming coastal arches, , undercutting e.r. 1-1ª @ points near rua da além.


intermittent creeks , small seasonal streams bisect parish., supporting growth of various settlements , neighbourhoods, involved inagriculture, including (from west east): ribeira granjo, ribeira são pedro , ribeira de fonte rego. 5 bridges cross these water courses @ são pedro, porceirão, igreja, second 1 in são pedro (at lower part of parish) , ponte nova.


bisected these natural barriers, parish developed in various nuclei associated roads , pathways interconnected pasturelands , woodlots along flanks of cabeço gordo volcano. consequently, small neighbourhoods or communities developed along: regional roadway (that included feteira de baixo, caminho meio , alto da lajinha), route connected feteira flamengos (that included cruz da portela, caminho das terças , lameiro grande), second lateral road included farrobim sul , intersected interior towards flamengos (that included cimo de são pedro, atalaia, grotas, fonte rego , cimo granjo), , roadway bisected these arterials starting in angústias (from courelas, across cruz da portela, portela , grotas, fonte rego).
