on april 20, 1534, cartier set sail under commission king, hoping discover western passage wealthy markets of asia. in words of commission, discover islands , lands said great quantity of gold , other precious things found .


it took him twenty days sail across ocean. starting on may 10 of year, explored parts of newfoundland, areas comprise canadian atlantic provinces , gulf of st. lawrence. during 1 stop @ Îles aux oiseaux (islands of birds, rochers-aux-oiseaux federal bird sanctuary, northeast of brion island in magdalen islands), crew slaughtered around 1000 birds, of them great auks (now extinct). cartier s first 2 encounters aboriginal peoples in canada on north side of chaleur bay, mi kmaq, brief; trading occurred.
