in 1097 william rufus, third son of william of england (william conqueror) began construction of westminster hall. hall become basis of palace of westminster which, throughout medieval period, prime royal residence. in 1089/90 william had given royal manor of bermondsey site of bermondsey abbey, founded in 1082 alwinus child, citizen of london. new abbey lay directly across thames white tower, still under construction. in 1123 augustinian priory church of st bartholomew-the-great founded @ west smithfield in city of london. whilst chancel of once large church survives, parish church, entire nave having been demolished, 1 of important remnants of norman architecture in london.
in 1176 construction began of famous incarnation of london bridge (completed in 1209) built on site of several earlier wooden bridges. bridge last 600 years, , remained bridge across river thames until 1739.
