a weir @ marlow recorded in domesday book, , there 14th century records of winch pull traffic through flash lock. lock problematical , in 16th , 17th century there accounts of conflicts between millers , navigators. particular problems shallow draught. first pound lock built of fir in 1773, seventh downstream of 8 built after 1770 navigation act. upstream of present lock on still proved problematical. rollers needed guide barges in , there no towpath barges needed tow ropes several hundred feet long. lock needed extensive repairs in 1780 , year later eel bucks had removed flash lock in case needed. first lock house erected in 1815 , in 1825 lock reconstructed on present site of headington stone. weir rebuilt in 1872. last rebuilding of lock occurred in 1927.
