between 12 may 1985 , 8 october 1988, holders of annual season tickets buy annual season ticket holder s railcard gave 50% discount on cheap day return fares , 34% off saver tickets journeys throughout british rail network. discounted tickets issued status code ast-h. 4 children travel railcard holder £1.00 each; tickets printed status code chast. discounted cheap day returns not bought on fridays.


from september 1987, more 12 months before annual season ticket holder s railcard discontinued, similar scheme began in network southeast area of london , southeast england. annual season tickets issued journeys within area became known gold cards, , season ticket functioned railcard giving various benefits broadly same received holders of former network card: 34% discounts , accompanying adults on off-peak fares, £1.00 flat-fare tickets children, , first class supplement upgrades. same time restriction (after 10.00am on weekdays; day @ weekends , on public holidays) applied. when gold card holder travelling on route covered gold card accompanying adults or children, separate discounted ticket not have purchased gold card holder in order secure relevant discounts other members of group.


as of 2007, these discounts still available. when network card changed more restrictive network railcard format, children receiving 60% discount subject minimum £1.00 fare (rather £1.00 flat fare in cases) , adults being subject £10.00 minimum fare on weekdays, gold card s conditions remained same before, , have not changed since. notably, first class supplement tickets still available gold card holders, whereas benefit has been withdrawn network railcard. these supplements cost £5.00 adults , £3.00 accompanying children, , permit travel in first class accommodation. (when first introduced, these supplements cost £3.00 , £1.50 respectively.)

following introduction of gold card , partner s card, new status code introduced tickets issued these: goldc adult tickets, child tickets showing chngc. gold seen on adult tickets in 1990.


a traveller purchasing annual travelcard loaded on oyster card issued gold record card when ticket sold (or post tickets issued online or telesales). gold record card can used access gold card discounts in same way gold card annual season ticket issued train operating companies.
