biography
early life
he born in kirkwood, suburb of st. louis, missouri on august 16, 1861. attended washington university of st. louis, graduated in 1883 degree in mining engineering.
career
in december 1885, moved leadville, colorado, work @ small hopes silver mine, in bonanza. worked way assayer become mine’s manager in 1888. while managing small hopes mine leased other leadville properties provided him modicum of financial independence.
in 1901, , family (wife della mullock , sons harvey s. mudd , seeley g. mudd) moved los angeles, california, worked consulting engineer guggenheim exploration company. acquired first major capital choosing receive percent of findings instead of fixed salary. in 1907 started ray copper mine in arizona, 1 of first large scale porphyry copper operations. time of death ray consolidated copper company had produced 200 million dollars worth of copper. still in production.
also in arizona, , ray con partner philip wiseman took wildcat speculation on united eastern mine in oatman district. when hit high grade ore in 1916 caused 1 of last of desert country gold rushes. high grade ore deposit proved arizona s richest , provided partners quick short-lived profit.
in 1914, before world war i, partnered charles godfrey gunther , philip wiseman drilling opportunity in island of cyprus, evidence of roman , phoenician mining of copper ore had been found. after obtaining permission british government, ruling cyprus @ time, cyprus mines corporation formally launched , in march 1916 , shares of stock authorized. detailed in story of cyprus mines corporation, david lavender credits seeley creation of company son harvey seeley mudd bringing in overwhelming success , profits of multi-national corporation.
during world war i, seeley mudd applied commission in engineer officers reserve corps, , on february 12, 1917, received commission major. in 1918 became colonel in u.s. army. served 1 of government s dollar year men, helping upgrade munitions production war department.
seeley w mudd died in st. louis may 24, 1926. advocate education and, among other gifts in will, provided 1 million dollars claremont college in pomona, california, had been chairman of board. sons follow in philanthropic foot steps.
