Career Billy Bowlegs III

as adult, renamed himself after billy bowlegs (holata micco), prominent seminole chief during seminole wars. black indian, bowlegs became elder in tribe. learned , taught history.


bowlegs befriended james mallory , minnie moore willson, moved florida in 1880s. became advocates seminole. couple described him in book, seminole of florida, 1896. wanted improve understanding of tribe s culture. willsons helped gain approval in 1913 florida state legislature 100,000-acre (400 km) reservation seminole in everglades. testified on seminole s behalf federal government in hearings in 1917. in mid-1950s, performed traditional dances @ florida folk festival in union county, on suwannee river.
