the concept of successful ageing can traced 1950s , popularised in 1980s. traditional definitions of successful ageing have emphasised absence of physical , cognitive disabilities. in 1987 article, rowe , kahn characterised successful ageing involving 3 components: a) freedom disease , disability, b) high cognitive , physical functioning, , c) social , productive engagement.
