the fitchburg public library established in 1859 after citizens of fitchburg approve article on warrant requesting $1851 , quarters in town hall first fitchburg public library.


in 1885 rodney wallace builds , furnishes wallace library , art gallery @ corner of main street , newton place gift people of fitchburg. in 1899 library service children begins in 1 of first children s rooms in country. wasn t unit 1950 new separate fitchburg youth library opened. service of library increased purchase of bookmobile extended service outlying areas of city.


fitchburg public library becomes first regional library in massachusetts regional library system in 1962.


the existing wallace library dedicated in 1967. named george r. wallace, jr. , wife alice g. wallace, gave magnificent gift library building. federal library services , construction act , money city of fitchburg funded project. , helen e. vickery fund provided new bookmobile.


in fiscal year 2008, city of fitchburg spent 1.34% ($1,111,412) of budget on public library—some $27 per person. in fiscal year 2009, city of fitchburg spent .48% ($388,977) of budget on public library -- $9.23 per person. represented year on year drop in municipal funding of 65% between fy2008 , fy2009. result, fitchburg public library did not meet massachusetts minimum standards of public library services , not certified massachusetts board of library commissioners fy2009. returned certification in fy2012.


furthermore, on going support comes friends of fitchburg public library. friends of fpl establish closer relations between library , people serves, promotes support of services, , funds several important services such purchasing books library , fees museum passes. friends work area museums bring museum passes can use visit exhibits reduced fees.


in 2014 fitchburg law library opened @ fitchburg public library in response closure of office on elm street in fitchburg. new library location accessible , open public.
