history
1920-1930s

on 28 july 1920 mohun bagan scheduled play jorabagan in coochbehar cup. jorabagan sent out starting eleven notable exclusion of defender sailesh bose dropped squad reasons not disclosed. vice-president of jorabagan, suresh chandra chaudhuri, asked bose included in line-up club coaches did not listen. chaudhuri left club due , along raja manmatha nath chaudhuri, ramesh chandra sen, , aurobinda ghosh, formed east bengal on 1 august 1920; 97 years ago.


the club participated in first tournament in same month of formation in hercules cup 7-a-side tournament. east bengal won tournament. after tournament club became affiliated indian football association. club entered league play in ifa second division. club finished in third place in first season in second division.


in 1924 club won second division gain promotion ifa first division after finishing in second place cameroons b . due cameroons being in first division b team not gain promotion , east bengal next in line promotion. more controversy arrose after found out ifa allowed 2 indian based clubs in ifa first division (back ifa british organization) , during governing body meeting 9 british clubs approved of allowing east bengal. after ifa removed indian club limit rule.


1940s–1970s

it took club till 1942 win first ifa first division title. in 1943 club won first ifa shield. club achieved double in 1945 winning both calcutta football league , ifa shield. club went on win 1949 rovers cup , durand cup in 1951. within time club won 3 straight ifa shields (1949, 1950, 1951). club partook in tour soviet union , romania in 1953, heavily defeated soviet side margin of 13–1. again club won rovers cup several times during era (1962, 1967, 1969, 1972, 1973, 1975) durand cup in (1952, 1956, 1960, 1967, 1970, 1972, 1978). club stunned winning 1970 ifa shield against pas club of iran 1–0. later club gained more respect winning 1973 ifa shield against pyongyang city sc of north korea club grew reputation after winning calcutta football league 6 straight years 1970 1975. s on record, throughout 70s decade, east bengal humiliated arch-rivals mohun bagan, many times, including massive 5 - 0 humiliation of mohun bagan in hands of east bengal. legends have it, mohun bagan players escaped fury of fans , spent entire month, hidden public view.


1980s–1990s

then in 1984 mr. dipak das came club , revamped it. brought in professionalism , turned club professionally ran company. club won federation cup in 1980 , again in 1985. became first indian club play in newly redone asian club championship in 1985. club won first treble in 1990 winning ifa shield, rovers cup, , durand cup in 1 season. club won stafford cup (1986), mcdowell s cup (1995, 1997). in 1993, east bengal fc won first ever international title i.e. wai wai cup in nepal. club won federation cup (india), ifa shield, calcutta football league, durand cup , rovers cup, several times during period. in 1996 club became founding members of first nationwide football league in india, national football league.


in 1998, das signed vijay mallya s united breweries group formed new private limited company called united east bengal football team private limited . club renamed kingfisher east bengal fc on.


recent history

the club entered 21st century in style winning 2000–01 national football league season. became first club win back titles after winning 2002–03 , 2003–04 versions of league , coming runners in 2010–11 , 2011–12 in i-league. club went on win federation cup (india) again in 2007, 2009, 2010 , 2012. won indian super cup in 2006 , 2011. club had won international trophy in 2003, asean club championship, in jakarta, indonesia.


the club went in semi-finals of reputed afc cup in 2013 lost against kuwait sc of kuwait.
