lavin has been married 3 times. first marriage ron leibman ended in divorce in 1980. second marriage kip niven (de), whom met on set of alice, ended in bitter divorce in 1992. while lavin has no biological children, stepmother children of second husband, , stepmother of third , current husband, artist/musician steve bakunas, whom married in 2005. couple had resided in wilmington, north carolina committed community members working rehabilitate impoverished neighborhoods including renovating many homes, donating park city , creating community theatre, red barn studio. in 1997, lavin founded linda lavin arts foundation in wilmington, promote , foster advancement of performing , visual arts, special emphasis on arts in education. foundation has created theater program called girl friends, purpose raise self-esteem of at-risk teenage girls of inner city.


in wilmington, stage director. 1 of directorial credits 1998 production of william shakespeare s it, updated brazilian jazz style. in both wilmington , new york teaches master classes in acting , singing.


in september 2012 lavin announced intended sell home in wilmington , return new york city. lavin , bakunas have lived in new york city since circa 2013–2014.
