Multilingualism today European Day of Languages



according european union survey europeans , languages ( special eurobarometer 243 , february 2006), 56% of eu citizens (25 member states) speak language other mother tongue, 44% admit not knowing languages other native language. however, 28% have knowledge of 2 foreign languages. among eu citizens, 38% indicate know english, followed 14% knowing french or german, 7% russian, 5% spanish , 3% italian. typical multilingual european student or holding managerial position or born in country language of his/her parents different main language of country.


with greater numbers of immigrants , refugees, european cities have become more multilingual. example: in moscow , saint petersburg many recent immigrants speak ukrainian, moldovan, armenian, tatar, azeri, tajik, chinese or 1 of many other languages; in london 300 languages spoken (english, french, chinese, polish, russian, spanish, portuguese, arabic, bengali, turkish, kurdish, berber, hindi, urdu, punjabi etc.).
