the mission of movement persuade wealthy landowners voluntarily give percentage of land landless people. however, land not sold. in effect, landless labourers being given small plot of land on can settle, grow of own food. government of various provinces, passed bhoodan acts stipulated beneficiary had no right sell land or use non-agricultural purpose- including forestry. example, under section 25 of maharashtra state bhoodan act, beneficiary (who must landless) should use land agricultural cultivation secure own , family s daily bread. if he/she fails cultivate land on year or tries use other non-agriculture activities, government has right confiscate it. vinoba bhave walked across india on foot, persuade landowners give piece of land. wanted peasants give using bullocks or tractors or other machines agricultural purposes. called rishi-kheti . wanted give using money, called kanchan-dan . keeping on move, escaped defamation (obloquy). followed crowds everywhere went. philosophically, vinoba bhave directly influenced sarvodaya movement of gandhi of spiritual heir. movement started on 18 april 1951 @ pochampally village in nalgonda district when telangana peasant movement on land issue reached peak. violent struggle launched poor peasants against local landlords. bhave said rural rich must participate in voluntary distribution of land.

the movement though independent of government had support of congress. jp narayan withdrew active politics join bhoodan movement in 1953. 1960s movement had lost flame despite considerable initial promise. sarvodaya samaj, however, on whole failed build active large scale mass movement generate irresistible pressure social transformation in large parts of country.

yet movement made significant contribution creating moral ambience, putting pressure on landlords, created conditions favorable landless.
