victoria dolphins

victoria’s contribution bcjfa officially began in 1971 when victoria dolphins admitted league. under direction of “mr. football”, head coach frank hindle, finished successful first year ending in third place 3-3-1. next season 1972, team grabbed second spot behind powerful vancouver meralomas, unfortunately defeated in first ever bcjfa semi-final game, held in victoria, north shore cougars. dolphins participated in bcjfa 1971 until 1979. in addition frank hindle, coached team in 1971, ’72, , ’77, other dolphin head coaches included roy vollinger (1973), ken werrun (1974, ’75 , ’76), brian gingell (1978), , paul shortt (1979). in 1979 kym clarke bcfc mvp. following 1979 season dolphins ceased part of bcjfa.


victoria hornets

in 1985, victoria hornets, had been dominating bcjfa tier ii league (players 18–20 years of age) under coach frank hindle, , provincial champions in 1983 , ’84, moved , again became full members of bcjfa @ tier level (players aged 22 , under).


victoria payless

in 1985 team became known victoria payless (payless gas stepped in , sponsored team, helped cover costs of playing @ new level). first year in junior final year of coaching frank hindle. team managed respectable fourth-place finish , grabbed last playoff spot. however, defeated in semi-final game richmond raiders. darryl brassard, bill grant, ted leonard, dan mclean , murray smith named bcjfl all-stars. new head coach, doug ferne, took on in 1985 , team failed make playoffs in ’86, hard work doug , staff in off season, 1987 team had great year , finished in second place behind bc champs okanagan sun. 1987 payless club, first time in 15 years, hosted bcjfa semi-final game against richmond raiders, upset in heart-breaker. in 1987 ian gordon named cjfl outstanding defensive player. midway through 1988 season coach ferne stepped down , head coaching role assumed paul shortt, continued through until 1993. during shortt’s reign, payless made play-offs 4 of 6 seasons. 4 play-off years 1990-93. in 1990 troy francis cjfl top defensive player , 1992 simon beckow named cjfl top offensive player.


vancouver island sharks

in 1994, payless gas withdrew sponsorship of team, , team name changed vancouver island sharks. new head coach rod outhwaite, , although finished in last place, foundation laid new era of football. 1995 saw new coach, gerry hornett, take over, , 2 years in gerry boss, team registered identical records , fourth-place finishes. in 1997, sharks fielded team half made of rookies, , under new head coach john hugi, had been assistant coach team 6 years.


victoria rebels

during off-season john cardillicha appointed head coach, , team again changed name , colours reflect new direction john wanted take them. 1998 rebels improved steadily throughout season, , finished in third place 6–4 record. while lost in first round of playoffs, season had considered success, , rebels looking forward better things in future. 1999 brought more success second-place finish due 6–3-1 record , cjfl defensive player mvp in scott gilbert (mennie). after promising win, rebels out played okanagan sun in first ever bcfc final. 2000 season resulted in 7–3 record , cjfl defensive player mvp, play of mike kissinger. rebels played okanagan sun , lost in over-time , missed advancing canadian bowl 38–43 score.


john cardillichia stepped down head coach @ end of 2002 season, matt bloker had been assistant coach assumed head coaching role, , coached 2003 , 2004 season before team moved nanaimo , renamed vancouver island raiders. on november 4, 2004 club announced team s board of directors voted move operations of team city of nanaimo 2005 season , beyond. however, @ special general meeting of vancouver island junior football society on december 21, society reversed vote relocate nanaimo. society replaced executive , board of directors new board of volunteers, , vowed stay in victoria.


paul orizatti assumed head coach role , in 2005 helped start new rebels organization bottom floor up, , continued on head coach until end of 2008 season.


in 2009 john cardilicchia once again came on board coach of rebels , continued until 2012.


westshore rebels

during 2010 off-season rebels changed name westshore rebels encompass re-branding , relocation newly built westhills stadium. in 2013 scott mennie took on head coach, , had step down before start of season. tim kearse stepped in intern head coach season , in 2014 andrew axhorn took on helm head coach season.


on march 4, 2011, team re-branded westshore rebels, team had played in township of langford previous 2 seasons. team announced continue playing home games out of bear mountain stadium. in 2014 canadian junior football league recognized 2014 rebels having top executive in canadian junior football, led team president elise pastro. rebels selected sportsman team in bcfc community outreach , professional conduct on , off football field.


in january 2015 rebels announced new head coach jc boice, has various championship titles under belt, held various ncaa roles , works full-time national football academies. new visionary , restructured executive board of directors, organization refocused , reunited crisp logo, updated team colours , renewed commitment westshore community. new family support, jc recruited , retained top coaches , players across canada.
