under portuguese rule, angola began mining iron in 1957, producing 1.2 million tons in 1967 , 6.2 million tons 1971. in 1970s, 70% of portuguese angola s iron exports went western europe , japan. after independence in 1975, angolan civil war (1975–2002) destroyed of territory s mining infrastructure. redevelopment of angolan mining industry started in late 2000s.
