although there cycling team competing @ beginning of second half of 20th century, professional cycling team founded 1996 season sponsorship of portuguese aluminium company, la pecol. group became 1 of important portuguese squads, developing great rivalry maia, great portuguese team.


the team participated in 2000 vuelta españa , andrei zinchenko won 14th stage, ended in lagos de covadonga. victory of russian, (winner of 3 stages in 1998), first victory of portuguese team in history of vuelta. in 2001 team not invited participate in vuelta españa, pretty competed in portuguese calendar. great rival of la-pecol-bombarral milaneza-maia, raced in vuelta (something had not happened in previous year). after 2004 season, sponsor pecol left team, ending designation la-pecol.

with new organization of cycling teams since 2005, team designated uci continental category (below categories protour , uci professional continental, first , second highest categories, respectively). season team received new sponsor, multinational liberty seguros, part of agreement, cyclists nuno ribeiro , sérgio paulinho moved spanish team liberty seguros-würth, protour cycling team run manolo saiz.


in 2006, result of operación puerto, liberty seguros withdrew sponsorship of spanish team, , portuguese team team sponsored insurer. in 2007 team stopped being sponsored la aluminios (now ancient milaneza-maia mss), team leaving designation la aluminium liberty seguros , becoming liberty seguros.


doping , extinction

on 18 september 2009, announced 3 cyclists, héctor guerra, isidro nozal , nuno ribeiro had tested positive cera @ 2009 volta portugal. on 21 october, uci announced counter-analysis confirmed positive control cyclists. doping case led liberty seguros withdraw sponsorship of team, led extinction professional team. team did continue elite level domestic team further 3 seasons before folding in 2012.
