History Astoria–Megler Bridge



ferry service between astoria , washington side of columbia river began in 1926. oregon department of transportation purchased ferry service in 1946. ferry service did not operate during inclement weather , half-hour travel time caused delays. in order allow faster , more reliable crossings near mouth of river, bridge planned. bridge built jointly oregon department of transportation , washington state department of transportation.


construction on structure began on november 5, 1962, , concrete piers cast @ tongue point, 4 miles (6.5 km) upriver. steel structure built in segments @ vancouver, washington, ninety miles (140 km) upriver, barged downstream hydraulic jacks lifted them place. on august 27, 1966, more 30,000 in attendance, governors mark hatfield of oregon , dan evans of washington opened bridge cutting ceremonial ribbon. cost of project $24 million, equivalent $177 million today, , paid tolls removed on december 24, 1993, more 2 years early.
