medical uses
in united states undersea , hyperbaric medical society, known uhms, lists approvals reimbursement diagnoses in hospitals , clinics. following indications approved (for reimbursement) uses of hyperbaric oxygen therapy defined uhms hyperbaric oxygen therapy committee:
air or gas embolism;
carbon monoxide poisoning;
carbon monoxide poisoning complicated cyanide poisoning;
central retinal artery occlusion;
clostridal myositis , myonecrosis (gas gangrene);
crush injury, compartment syndrome, , other acute traumatic ischemias;
decompression sickness;
enhancement of healing in selected problem wounds;.
diabetically derived illness, such short-term relief of diabetic foot, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy;
exceptional blood loss (anemia);
idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss;
intracranial abscess;
mucormycosis, rhinocerebral disease in setting of diabetes mellitus;
necrotizing soft tissue infections (necrotizing fasciitis);
osteomyelitis (refractory);
delayed radiation injury (soft tissue , bony necrosis);
skin grafts , flaps (compromised);
thermal burns.
evidence insufficient support use in autism, cancer, diabetes, hiv/aids, alzheimer s disease, asthma, bell s palsy, cerebral palsy, depression, heart disease, migraines, multiple sclerosis, parkinson s disease, spinal cord injury, sports injuries, or stroke. cochrane review published in 2016 has raised questions ethical basis future clinical trials of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, in view of increased risk of damage eardrum in children autism spectrum disorders. despite lack of evidence, in 2015, number of people utilizing therapy has continued rise.
hearing issues
there limited evidence hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves hearing in patients sudden sensorineural hearing loss present within 2 weeks of hearing loss. there indication hbot might improve tinnitus presenting in same time frame.
chronic ulcers
hbot in diabetic foot ulcers increased rate of ulcer healing not appear provide benefit in wound healing @ long-term follow-up. in particular, there no difference in major amputation rate. venous, arterial , pressure ulcers, no evidence apparent hbot provides long-term improvement on standard treatment.
radiation injury
there evidence hbot effective late radiation tissue injury of bone , soft tissues of head , neck. people radiation injuries of head, neck or bowel show improvement in quality of life. importantly, no such effect has been found in neurological tissues. use of hbot may justified selected patients , tissues, further research required establish best people treat , timing of hbo therapy.
neuro-rehabilitation
as of 2012 there insufficient evidence support using hyperbaric oxygen therapy treat people have traumatic brain injuries. in stroke, hbot not show benefit. hbot in multiple sclerosis has not shown benefit , routine use not recommended.
a 2007 review of hbot in cerebral palsy found no difference compared control group. neuropsychological tests showed no difference between hbot , room air , based on caregiver report, received room air had better mobility , social functioning. children receiving hbot reported experience seizures , need tympanostomy tubes equalize ear pressure, though incidence not clear.
cancer
in alternative medicine, hyperbaric medicine has been promoted treatment cancer. 2012 review article in journal, targeted oncology, reports there no evidence indicating hbo neither acts stimulator of tumor growth nor enhancer of recurrence. on other hand, there evidence implies hbo might have tumor-inhibitory effects in cancer subtypes, , believe need expand our knowledge on effect , mechanisms behind tumor oxygenation. however, 2011 study american cancer society reported no evidence effective purpose.
migraines
low-quality evidence suggests hyperbaric oxygen therapy may reduce pain associated acute migraine headache in cases. not known people benefit treatment, , there no evidence hyperbaric medicine can prevent future migraines. more research necessary confirm effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy treating migraines.
