History Orpington railway station







the station opened on 2 march 1868 south eastern railway (ser), when ser opened cut-off line between chislehurst , sevenoaks. previously, trains between london , tunbridge wells had taken circuitous route via redhill. line widened , station rebuilt in 1904, expanding 6 platforms. third rail electrification reached orpington in 1925, , extended sevenoaks in 1935. time southern heights light railway proposed, have diverged main line south of orpington , finished @ sanderstead. crofton roman villa partly destroyed railway cutting in late 1800s (re)discovered in 1926 when work carried out area west of station entrance entrance new council building. platforms 7 , 8 built in 1990s on site of former carriage sidings. in 2008, station became accessible following opening of new footbridge providing lift access platforms. in 2013 former steam locomotive shed (closed steam in 1926 in use sidings until 1960) still standing converted offices (sited adjacent platform 8).


in 2014 car park rebuilt 2 stories increase capacity.
