from 1947 until 1988, illinois portion of chicago metro area served single area code, 312, abutted 815 area code. in 1988 708 area code introduced , 312 area code became exclusive city of chicago.


it became common call suburbanites 708 ers , in reference area code.


the 708 area code partitioned in 1996 3 area codes, serving different portions of metro area: 630, 708, , 847.


at same time 708 area code running out of phone numbers, 312 area code in chicago exhausting supply of available numbers. result, city of chicago divided 2 area codes, 312 , 773. rather divide city north/south area code, central business district retained 312 area code, while remainder of city took new 773 code.


in 2002, 847 area code supplemented overlay area code 224. in february 2007, 815 area code (serving outlying portions of metro area) supplemented overlay area code 779. in october 2007, overlay area code 331 implemented supplement 630 area additional numbers.
