diamantina returned sydney, arriving @ garden island on 13 december 1945, 78 passengers embarked. ship remained in sydney until 1 february 1946, when departed patrol in new guinea waters. diamantina returned sydney in mid-june, , after sailing williamstown paid off reserve on 9 august 1946.


the ship awarded battle honour pacific 1945 wartime service.


1959–80

diamantina recommissioned oceanographic survey ship on 22 june 1959. carried pennant numbers f377, a266, , gor266 @ various points throughout period of career. after completing first oceanographic survey in july, embarked on first oceanographic cruise on 20 august. on 20 september, ship performed first survey of montebello islands following british atomic test, operation hurricane. on 22 october, diamantina carried out first survey of waters around christmas island.


diamantina’s notable achievement during second commission discovery of deepest known part of indian ocean on 7 february 1960, named diamantina deep after ship. based in fremantle, western australia, diamantina remained in service oceanographic vessel until 1980; briefly interrupted these duties in march 1963, escorting royal yacht during queen elizabeth ii s tour australia.
