in first few years of twentieth century, h.m. beatty, chief locomotive superintendent of cape government railways (cgr), experimented various forms of compound steam locomotives. 1 of these engines delivered north british locomotive company (nbl) in 1907. three-cylinder compound locomotive, based on second version of cgr’s karoo class. locomotive numbered 900, not classified cgr , referred compound karoo.
