dpp list

the dpp list of video nasties first made public in june 1983. list modified monthly prosecutions failed or dropped. in total, 72 separate films appeared on list @ 1 time or another. 39 films prosecuted under obscene publications act of these films have been subsequently cut , approved release bbfc. remaining 33 either not prosecuted or had unsuccessful prosecutions. 10 films remain banned in uk because have not yet been resubmitted classification distributors or have been rejected classification.


a number of films spent short time on list because prosecutions failed shortly after publication or because decided prosecution not worth pursuing. ultimately, list became obsolete when video recordings act came force, , since 2001, several of films have been released uncut. in majority of cases below cuts made, scenes of real-life animal cruelty and/or excessive violence women, both of still regarded degree of severity bbfc. large number of these movies caused additional controversy cover art of original big box releases seen in video shops of 1980s. unless noted otherwise, films have been released have been rated 18.


the dpp list divided 2 sections: section 2 , section 3. title seized under section 2 make dealer or distributor liable prosecution disseminating obscene materials. dealers fined or jailed , film declared obscene if prosecution successful, meaning not distributed or sold in uk until obscenity quashed. 39 of section 2 films prosecuted , remained banned. 33 of section 2 films had unsuccessful prosecutions , subsequently dropped list , placed onto section 3.


section 3 titles liable confiscated under less obscene charge, allowed police seize film considered obscene , long dealer cooperated, legally admit articles obscene , therefore escape personal prosecution. 33 films couldn t prosecuted under section 2 automatically became section 3 titles , still seized police. main difference between section 2 , 3 video dealers or distributors prosecuted in court holding film under section 2 not under section 3, obscenity admitted through forfeiting material.

a supplementary list issued along official list featured list of so-called section 3 video nasties . titles on section 3 list not prosecuted obscenity liable seizure , confiscation under less obscene charge. tapes seized under section 3 destroyed after distributors or merchants forfeited them.

maniac — banned cinema in 1981 , again video in 1998. released 58 seconds of cuts in 2002.
mother s day — banned cinema in 1980. released uncut in 2015.
the new york ripper — banned cinema in 1982 , re-exported original distributor in italy. released 29 seconds of cuts in 2002.
straw dogs — passed uncut cinema. withdrawn around video nasty period not included on list. given uncut theatrical re-release in 1995 2 subsequent attempts pass film video in 1999 resulted in bbfc rejections. released uncut in 2002.

a clockwork orange – believed have been banned bbfc, stanley kubrick himself withdrew film exhibition in uk in 1973 on police advice after receiving death threats toward himself , family, disliking reports found in british press film responsible copycat violence. quoting kubrick: try , fasten responsibility on art cause of life seems me put case wrong way around. art consists of reshaping life not create life, nor cause life. furthermore, attribute powerful suggestive qualities film @ odds scientifically accepted view that, after deep hypnosis, in posthypnotic state, people cannot made things @ odds natures. after kubrick s death, film re-released uncut @ cinemas in uk in 2000, , thereafter on both vhs , dvd.
child s play 3 – film became notorious in united kingdom when suggested might have inspired real-life murder of british child james bulger (a suggestion rejected officers investigating case) , murder of suzanne capper.
the exorcist – although never officially cut or banned in uk, several attempts release film on video thwarted bbfc censor james ferman, cited both age of possessed girl (as under 12, film might have had significant appeal underaged viewers) , reports of incidents of hysteria involving young women (leading concerns film might cause severe emotional problems believed in demonic possession) obstacles home release. following successful theatrical re-release in 1998 , ferman s retirement censor in january 1999, film submitted home video release first time in february 1999, , passed uncut 18 certificate.
last house on dead end street – known fun house, film intended target when bbfc mistakenly added funhouse list (see above).
scum – features tagline film tried ban . original tv film made bbc, later decided not broadcast owing violence , suicides in film. remade of original production team , released in cinemas, , released on vhs @ height of video nasties controversy, becoming associated them in media.
mikey – film withdrawn release in united kingdom following james bulger murder in liverpool in 1993. decision made bbfc refused issue uk release certificate in 1996. remains prohibited in uk.
urotsukidōji: legend of overfiend – described anime critics video nasty, anime contained scenes of graphic violence , tentacle rape attacked british press , politicians, feared such animation used corrupt children , should banned. no ban issued , resulting publicity led increased sales. later releases of anime heavily censored, leading plot being confusing.
