in 1993, department of defence issued request tender 6 coastal minehunters replace problematic bay-class minehunters. tender awarded in august 1994 australian defence industries (adi) , intermarine spa, proposed modified gaeta-class minehunter.
diamantina has full load displacement of 732 tons, 52.5 metres (172 ft) long, has beam of 9.9 metres (32 ft), , draught of 3 metres (9.8 ft). main propulsion single fincantieri gmt bl230-bn diesel motor, provides 1,985 brake horsepower (1,480 kw) single controllable-pitch propeller, allowing ship reach 14 knots (26 km/h; 16 mph). maximum range 1,600 nautical miles (3,000 km; 1,800 mi) @ 12 knots (22 km/h; 14 mph), , endurance 19 days. standard ship s company consists of 6 officers , 34 sailors, accommodation 9 additional (typically trainees or clearance divers). main armament msi ds30b 30 mm cannon, supplemented 2 0.50 calibre machine guns. sensor suite includes kelvin-hughes type 1007 navigational radar, gec-marconi type 2093m variable-depth minehunting sonar, awadi prism radar warning , direction-finding system, , radamec 1400n surveillance system. 2 wallop super barricade decoy launchers fitted.
for minehunting operations, diamantina uses 3 120 horsepower (89 kw) riva calzoni azimuth thrusters provide maximum speed of 6 knots (11 km/h; 6.9 mph): 2 located @ stern, while third sited behind variable-depth sonar. mines located minehunting sonar, , can disposed of vessel s 2 double eagle mine disposal vehicles, oropesa mechanical sweep, mini-dyad magnetic influence sweep, or towed amass influence sweep (which not carried). prevent damage if mine detonated nearby, ships built glass-reinforced plastic, moulded in single monocoque skin no ribs or framework. ships work clearance divers, fitted small recompression chamber.
