Biography Sesshū Tōyō



shōkoku-ji, zen temple sesshū studied painting under shūbun


around 1440 sesshū left bitchū kyoto, large city capital of japan. lived monk @ shōkoku-ji, famous zen temple. there, sesshū studied zen under shunrin suto (春林周藤), famous zen master, , painting under tenshō shūbun, highly regarded japanese painter of time. shūbun s style, of japanese zen painters, inspired chinese song dynasty painters such ma yuan, xia gui, guo xi, , others. there no surviving works sesshū period, late work shows similar influences. sesshū spent 20 years in kyoto, , left yamaguchi prefecture become chief priest of unkoku temple. around time started calling himself sesshū ( snow boat ).

sesshū stayed in china until 1469. because of Ōnin war, not stay in yamaguchi, , settled instead in Ōita prefecture in kyūshū, built studio, tenkai zuga-rō. occupied himself painting , teaching, , made trips various areas of japan. on 1 of such trips, in 1478, sesshu went masuda, shimane, on invitation kanetaka masuda, lord of iwami province. painter entered sūkan-ji (崇観寺), made 2 zen gardens there, , painted portrait of masuda kanetaka, , birds , flowers of 4 seasons.


in 1486 sesshū came yamaguchi. many of extant works date last years of life, including long landscape scroll (sansui chōkan, 1486), splashed-ink landscape (破墨山水 haboku sansui) (1495), , others. 1 such work, view of ama-no-hashidate (c. 1501–05), bird s eye view of famous sandbar in tango province. paint it, artist, eighties, had climb tall mountain, evidently still in health. in 1506, died, aged 87. single self-portrait of sesshū known through later copy made follower.
