the church of theotokos, oldest in complex, church known certainty have been built in mainland greece in tenth century. centralized parallelogram-shaped building oldest example of cross-in-square type in country; plan closely follows of lips monastery in constantinople. walls opus mixtum (part brick, part stone, part marble) , display curious pseudo-kufic patterns.
the church of theotokos adjoins larger cathedral church, or katholikon, tentatively dated 1011-12. katholikon earliest extant domed-octagon church, 8 piers arranged around perimeter of naos (nave). hemispherical dome (without drum) rests upon 4 squinches make transition octagonal base under dome square defined walls below. main cube of church surrounded galleries , chapels on 4 sides.
